Last night, my dear friend Danny and I went to dinner.. We chatted about (at that time) the pending execution of Saddam Hussain.. Danny's reaction to my opinion, scared me. It scares me that more people don't think like I do..
Danny looked at me like I was insane.. Me?!?!
I am going to get a-top of my tide box here.. and give you what I think.. and then I will stop, promise.
I have always thought that A life is this precious gift. I believe that there is a God and "he" is the one that gave me and every other person this gift. We created the society and if people break the rules of the society, we have the right to take them out of the society and not let them live in the society..(Jail) but under no circumstance do I think that we have the right to take away another person's life. It is not our's to take. The mere idea that a government plans the murder of another human being FRIGHTENS me. It is wrong. The ultimate punishment is to take away someone's freedom. Go into your closet.. shut the door .. and stay in there for a while. It isn't a life you would want to live and that is punishment.
Murdering someone .. who murders someone to show that murder is wrong, doesn't make sense. It is simple as that.
I in no way agree, condone, comprehend the evil that is in Saddam Hussain. But I do know that he was probably scared and felt very alone and I feel bad for him. I prayed for him.

I agree with your thoughts, your friend Danny was wrong to disagree. A life is precious, and, so long as it can be prevented from causing others pain and suffering (as can be achieved through the forms of punishment that you mention), it should be preserved--not just for that life alone but for the humanity in all of us.
But of course episodes involving self defense or a front line soldier's war, may rightfully involve the taking of a life when the threat caused by the life that is taken in self defense or war, could not been prevented by administration of the punishment you mention.
